Tarpon Springs Epiphany Cross Dive 2013

Every year around this time Tarpon Springs hosts its annual Epiphany at the Spring Bayou near West Tarpon Avenue, Tarpon Springs.  Pretty much everyone knows that it is always on January 6th no matter what day of the week that it falls on but many people forget and need to be reminded.  This event is an historic event dating back to the early 1900s in Tarpon Springs.  This is done to remember and celebrate the baptism of Jesus Christ.  The Greek tradition is coveted by young boys from 16 to 18 years of age.  They drive into the cold waters to retrieve a cross that is thrown to them by the bishop of their Greek faith.  The tradition states that the winner will have many blessing bestowed on him in the coming year.  It is an honor to the winner and also to the family who proudly watches on the sidelines.  The dive is followed by a festival and more celebrating in the Craig Park area of Tarpon Springs.  Many people (15,000+) from all around the area are expected to attend and to converge on Tarpon Springs for the 107th Epiphany celebration January 6, 2013
