Plans are underway to bring new construction of 25 affordable townhomes to Dunedin’s workforce. Priced from $130,000 to $160,000 this is a much needed effort for the city’s workers such as city employees and hospital staff. Ground breaking begins early 2008 near the Martin Luther King Jr. Recreational Center. While homeowners must meet certain income requirements to be eligible, the city is confident that many nearby workers will finally be able to buy Dunedin homes in the city where they actually work.
Afforable new construction is just about extinct in Pinellas County since much of the area is built out. Many developers try to squeeze every penny out of vacant land, building big, expensive homes. This leaves out a major percentage of the work force in Dunedin. The Dunedin Housing Authority is donating the land which is 2.5 acres so that this can be possible. Those involved hope that this venture will respresent a model for communities in other parts of the state of Florida.
